State park to host morning hikes and afternoon ambles

January 28, 2009
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park staff and volunteer guides invite visitors to join them on a guided nature walk at the Old Datsun Trail in Punta Gorda. Hikes are scheduled for the first Saturday and the second Wednesday each month from 9 a.m. to approximately 11:30 a.m. through mid-April.

Hike through pine flat woods, oak hammock and reclaimed farm fields. See ongoing resource restoration work, learn about alien invaders, the roll of fire in Florida's environment, the land and water connection, and observe wildlife in their natural environment.

Field trips are free of charge but advance registration is required. Early registration is advised, as space is limited. Special group tours may also be arranged. Field trips may be subject to cancellation due to weather, low registration and guide availability. Portions of the trail may be closed or rerouted at times for resource management or bald eagle nesting activities. For reservations, information and directions, call the Preserve office at (941) 575-5861, ext. 100 during regular business hours (8 a.m. 5 p.m.), Monday through Friday.
