For the third tropical year in a row, the Yucatan Beach Stand (250 Old San Carlos Blvd.) is proud to announce its Mid-Winter Luau, scheduled for this Sunday, Jan. 30, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering beach-goers some extra weekend island fun, with hula-hooping, fire-dancing, hog-roasting and so much more, all while raising funds for a great local cause.

"The Mid-Winter Luau is a chance for us to celebrate the island and help a great cause Keep Lee County Beautiful at the same time," said Stephen DeAngelis, general manager of the Yucatan Beach Stand. "Keep Lee County Beautiful is responsible for many of our beach clean-ups and the Monofilament Madness event held every year. It's nice to give back to an organization that directly helps our island."

During the luau, a hog roast will begin at 2 p.m., the ugliest Hawaiian shirt contest starts at 4 p.m. and a hula-hooping contest starts spinning around 5 p.m. Then, at dusk, around 6:30/7 p.m., the Bohemian Fire crew will light up the air with dazzling and heated feats similar to those they performed during the Pirate Festival back in October.

"Be sure to stick around after their first show, as they may just perform an encore presentation shortly after," Stephen said.

Throughout the day, live music from John Friday and various other local artists will be heard from the Yucatan stage, and luau guests can indulge in the hog roast, along with other hot and tasty BBQ goodies, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, the restaurant's award-winning ribs and many other Yucatan delicacies.

Feel free to kick back and enjoy many sumptuous drinks from the margarita station or cool off at the big beer truck.

Take a chance and enter the many raffles at the raffle tent, or enjoy lots of awesome prizes and giveaways.

"Keep Lee County Beautiful has many great prizes to raffle off during the luau. And be sure to stick around for our many fabulous vendors that will be set up in our luau lot," Stephen said. "We'll have all types of tropical vendors on hand offering many great items, like coconut jewelry, hand-painted tropical signs, and lots more."

Vendor space is still available if interested in setting up shop for the day. Call Stephen DeAngelis to reserve your spot at 822-1369.

There is no charge to enter the luau, and there will be plenty to do all throughout the day for the whole fam.

"This is the day to wear that Hawaiian shirt you have hanging in your closet, along with a grass skirt and coconut bra, because you know you really want to!" Steve laughed.
