Fire chief to ask commission about WTC artifact

August 10, 2011
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

As many of you are aware the Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District has been awarded an Artifact from the World Trade Center. The District was granted the Artifact by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which the FMBFCD took possession of last Friday, July 29.

My proposal to honor those Americans that lost their lives and lost loved ones on that day is to resurrect a monument and memorial at Station 33, which will display the Artifact along with the American Flag. I will bring this proposal before the FMBFCD Board of Commissioners at our Aug. 16 Commission Meeting for approval.

If approved by the Board, it will be a permanent memorial for all Beach residents and visitors to honor and remember our fellow Americans that lost their lives on that Dark Day in History.

I would personally like to thank everyone that has helped support the District to honor this memorial.

If you have any questions or inquiries, please call me directly at 590-4200.

Mike Becker

FMB Fire Chief
