Florida Libraries

Those involved in libraries are likely aware that Florida's public libraries continue to be resilient and essential community treasures. This year, Florida held two Snapshot Days, one in January and one earlier this month to give one the opportunity to see libraries in real time.

Stats are still being gathered for the day this month but the Snapshot in January showed 255,268 Floridians visited in person and borrowed 332,732 books, DVDs and magazines.

Libraries are busier than ever, providing incredible service in these challenging economic times. We are looking forward to the opportunity to expand services with the completion of our construction project.

We carry a lot of print magazines because they are constantly being used. Not only do many enjoy reading them in the library and back issues can be checked out. You can digest five issues at a time, and checkout period is the same as for all materials: two weeks.

Consider also the convenience of online searching of magazines. If you visit our library website at or also if it's easier to remember, go to and near the bottom of the page click on Florida Electronic Library. Log in from home using your library card number (no spaces--just the digits). Then click on Newspapers & Magazines. Click on A-Z publications. In the box where it says 'find title' type the magazine you're interested in. For example, if PC Magazine is desired, type that in and then a box appears with the info saying that 12 issues are published per year and that the database contains issues from January 1983 to the present. Highlighted are links for the most recent two issues. Read it. One can also choose topics to research or read and get a listing of various articles found in a variety of magazines. During the past year these electronic resources were used 21103 times. Discover the treasure!

Thanks for your adjustment in being closed last week Monday. The contractors got a lot done and, while they had a few surprises, work progressed in the end as they had hoped. You see part of the evidence in the huge beam that goes upward into the ceiling in the stairway from the first to second floors.

A total of 637 people visited the library on Tuesday after the closure. We remain committed to keeping down time as little as possible during construction.

If you purchased a bestseller or received a book/DVD as a gift and you enjoyed it a lot, consider giving it to the library so that we can consider adding it to the collection and let it be enjoyed by others too. This thoughtfulness is not only in the spirit of public libraries but adds to our community.

Consider including the Library Construction Fund in your end of the year gift-giving. Thanks.

A government clerk won 50 million rupees ($1 million) in India's version of our "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." The 27-year-old Sushil Kumar, who has a psychology degree but works as a computer operator on a $130-a-month salary, said he plans to use the money to pay off his parents' debts, buy a new home, and build a library in his hometown of Motihari. Talk about having one's priorities straight!

Library Hours

Don't remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5, and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
