To the editor:
I am in favor of the referendum ballot question regarding Town Hall as it provides an additional option for the Town.
To me, the decision should be based on which option provides an efficient and practical facility at the least cost to the taxpayers. The options include leasing as well as purchase.
Currently, the Town leases on a three-year basis. We have offered to purchase the existing building recently; however, the suggestion was rejected. The Town has no guarantee that in two years, when the current lease expires, we will be able to renew.
If passed, the referendum will allow the Town to evaluate and consider a purchase, but also have options to lease. Our new Town Attorneys advised us of wording, which makes a long-term lease possible.
The Council is asking the taxpayers to provide a tool to seek the best alternative for the Town.
The Council, working with staff, would have two years to consider short and long-term leases, lease with the option to buy, acquisition of land and building, as well as eminent domain.
