LCSO specialist speaks to Beach Kiwanis

January 26, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Lee County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Specialist Michelle Sargis discussed the importance of a neighborhood watch at the weekly meeting of the Fort Myers Beach Kiwanis at Saint Rafael's Church on Jan. 19.

Sargis explained a neighborhood watch is not a vigilante group, but a deterrent from crime. Members of a Neighborhood Watch become the eyes and ears of that community when police officers cannot get there. There are precautions individuals can do to discourage being a target of burglary. These precautions include locking the doors, even if you're in the back yard, keeping your windows and blinds closed, using motion lights outside and using timer for lights inside. The more activity on your property, the better your odds of not being targeted.

For more information on Neighborhood Watch or Crime Prevention contact the Lee County Sheriff Office. The Kiwanis Thrift Shop is located at the corner of Summerlin and Pine Ridge roads. The phone number is 454-8090. Please visit our website at Volunteers and new members are always welcomed.
