Miss Kater Construction: 2012 Shrimp Queen

March 14, 2012

Last year's first runner-up is this year's queen.

Nineteen-year-old Jamie Costa was crowned 2012 Shrimp Queen by 2011 Shrimp Queen Devin McDaniel at the 54th annual Fort Myers Beach Lions Shrimp Festival this past weekend. She was first runner-up in 2011.

The annual shrimp festival queen pageant, held on the pavilion at Lynn Hall Park, was one of many activities - an hour-long parade and weekend-long Food Fun & Crafts Expo among them- put on by the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club. The local shrimp boat fleet provided fresh Gulf shrimp for all who purchased.

Costa, who majors in Biology at Edison State College, was enrolled in the medical academy in high school where she received two certified licenses. She now performs clinical rounds at Gulf Coast Hospital and received a Hope scholarship for her academics and community service.

"I would like to take the time to thank Sheila Kelley and Fran Peters for putting on such a great pageant," she said. "I also want to thank the Lions Club for everything they do throughout the year and for their hard work and dedication and everyone for coming out."

Before the actual pageant, 50 percent of the voting was tabulated at the Queen's Sunset Social at Gulfshore Grill on March 4. The other 50 percent was decided by three random judges representing Nova Scotia, Ontario and Minnesota at the pageant.

"It's a wonderful day and a wonderful event," said emcee Lion Jack Clark. "Lion Pageant Coordinator Sheila Kelley has done an amazing job with her focus, vision and commitment to the Lions Club."

Crowns and contestant gifts were donated by You Look Mahvalous fashion jewelry outlet in Fort Myers. The Gulfshore Grill, Hester Photography and the Island Sandpaper were applauded for their efforts as well.

Princess Ashley Mueller, sponsored by Semmer Electric, was selected as first runner-up to the queen. Miss Red Coconut RV Resort Christina Glase was named Miss Photogenic, while Miss Trico Shrimp Casey Costa was chosen Miss Congeniality.
