What's better on a hot spring day than a big bowl of cool, savory, mouth-watering ice cream, topped with hot fudge, chopped nuts, sprinkles and a cherry??The Bayside Kookie Band knows how to keep the public refreshed and entertained throughout season, offering a very special ice cream social Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. in the Bayside Estates grand hall, Pine Ridge Road and San Carlos Boulevard. The cost to attend??Just $5!

For 30 years, the Bayside Kookie Band has danced, sung and enterained their ways into the hearts of all who've watched them.

"The Bayside Kookie Band is a kazoo band that plays washboards, gutbuckets and drums, along with a wonderful piano player, cloggers, specials dancers, great singers and specialty acts. We have so much fun, and plan to entertain our ice cream social guests with a 1.5-hour routine," said Sue Scully, organizer and emcee of the event, as well as washboarder and band member for 17 years. "We will have our stage set up like a jukebox cafe of the 1950s and '60s, playing music of that generation, and we will all be all dressed up in poodle skirts."

Along with a great performance, ice cream social guests can look forward to a fabulous display of ice creams and toppings to select from, along with fresh and homemade cookies, made by hand by local Bayside Estates members and bakers.

"We will have all types of ice cream to choose from, and of course, we will have the essentials, including chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, as well as butter pecan and other flavors and there will be plenty of toppings to make the tastiest sundae," Sue said. "We will also have lots of homemade cookies, made by members of the Kookie Band, and drinks, like coffee, tea, water, lemonade and so on."

There are usually at least 200 guests that make it to the Kookie Band's ice cream social every year, and Sue doesn't think this year will be any different.

History of the Bayside Kookie Band

About 30 years ago, the Bayside Kookie Band, comprised of nearly 20 members of Bayside Estates, was started by amazing pianist Florrie Peters, now more than 100 years old.

"Florrie is a wonderful piano player. But, when she could no longer play, another wonderful piano player moved into the park and took over for her,"?Sue said. "And, one of our band members, Edie Allen is an original member of the band. She has been part of the group since its inception over 30 years ago."

Aside from entertaining guests at ice cream socials within their lovely residential community, the Bayside Kookie Band travels around town, bringing smiles and cheer to local retirement homes and charities.

"We play at different nursing homes, and the Shrine Club, to keep spirits high and everyone smiling. We really have a fun time doing that," Sue said. "We just have a fun time. We practice every Tuesday morning, and put a lot of time and effort into our routines. We enjoy doing what we can to give back to the community."
