Windward Passage residents need LeeTran trolley stop

April 4, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

We have been coming for our winter vacation to Fort Myers Beach for the past 30 years, and we always look forward to our time in your community. One of the best features of our holiday is the inexpensive trolley transportation that runs up and down the beach. For many years we always had a car, but when my husband passed away, I still could continue to come to our favorite place, as the trolley transportation gave me independence. We stay at a resort called Windward Passage Resort, located at 418 Estero Blvd.

In the past years there has always been a trolley stop right in front of our resort. There was also a bench supplied by the local Kiwanis Club, right in front for us to sit on to wait for the trolley. Most of us are now in our 80s. We can no longer drive a car, but the trolley system enabled us to take to any of the destinations all along Estero Boulevard. It has been wonderful!!!

Now, you can imagine our terrible disappointment this past winter when we found out that LeeTran had re-routed its schedule and no longer had a stop at Windward Passage. Alsothe bench had been taken away. Most of us, during the months of January, February and March need to depend on the trolleys for getting around the Beach. We've made numerous phone calls, written letters, petitions, etc. to implore Fort Myers Beach to restore the previous schedule. Roughly 80 percent of the residents in this building are handicapped and cannot get around without the Trolley. We are unable to walk to the next stop and cannot stand for long periods of time waiting, if there is no bench. We have been unable to get any sympathy or promise that this problem will be fixed next winter.

I cannot explain how important it is for us to have a trolley stop at Windward Passage and for a bench to be returned to the front by the road. Is there any chance that this could happen? Does this mean we will have to give up our vacation spot that we all love so much? Can you help us in any way as to whom we need to make an appeal? We need your assistance, and your suggestions would be truly appreciated, or help from your readers.

Thanking you from sincerely distressed senior citizens who live at Windward Passage.
