Lee VCB poised to unveil enhanced digital marketing assets

April 4, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

In today's digital world, more Americans have smartphones than ever before. In fact, according to Pew Research, for the first time, the number of smartphone users outnumbers Americans with non-smartphones. To stay on the forefront of this trend, the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau is enhancing its digital offerings to ensure smartphone users and other tech savvy travelers have easy digital access to information about The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel.

According to the recently released data, 46 percent of Americans own a smartphone, while 41 percent own a non-smartphone. And it's not just young people who have smartphones in hand. Smartphone usage is increasing across all demographic groups, the research found.

Over the next few months, the VCB will unveil three electronic assets to ensure that no matter the digital device, users will have the best and most optimized access to information about our destination. First, we will launch a Lonely Planet eBook, which will include the same information as the printed Lonely Planet Travel Guide, but in electronic form available on all digital devices and platforms.

Second, the VCB is redesigning its website and launching a new mobile website. The mobile site will have unique offerings specifically designed to enhance the mobile user experience.

Third, we are launching a friend fare finder Facebook app to encourage users to invite their Facebook friends to visit by quickly locating the lowest airfare from their homes to Southwest Florida International Airport. The VCB is the first organization in the world to utilize this truly revolutionary technology.

We are very excited about these digital assets and believe they will broaden our destination's exposure to growing population of digital users. Travelers and potential visitors certainly will benefit from ease of access to these new digital projects, but so too will our industry partners. The digital medium will allow us to include live links to partner websites and interactive maps. Co-op marketing opportunities abound as well, making exposure for our partners more robust than ever before. And at the same time, our push toward digital assets is good for the environment and promotes sustainability.

I encourage you to explore how your business, attraction or property can benefit from these digital enhancements. For questions or details, please feel free to contact our Marketing Director Laura Chmielewski. Call her at 338-3500 or email
