Celebrate National Library Week at your library
We continue to celebrate National Celebrate Week. Join us particularly for the music afternoon at the library from 3-5 p.m. Bring along a favorite title to read or just soak in the music.
Brad Meltzer, who moved to Florida at the age of 13, is the Chair of National Library Week. As a suspense novel writer, he makes frequent mention of the fact that without librarians he would not be a writer today.
Mystery fans might pick up his novels and there are many: "The Book of Fate," "Dead Even," "The Inner Circle," " The Tenth Justice" and "The Zero Game" just to mention a few (M MEL). He also wrote a book for children "Heroes for My Son" (J 920).
Brad would remind us that every day across the country, libraries open their doors to everyone: students, parents, seniors, teachers, writers, artists, job seekers, entrepreneurs, readers, gamers, movie lovers and travel buffs.
The Friend's bookstore has been a special experience for many. There are those residents and visitors who stop in on a regular basis, and others who stop by when they are here. One couple who has been coming to the Beach for 12-plus years would not think of being here without the regular visits with the Friends.
We appreciate the donations to the Friend's of the Library and the store provides a priceless opportunity for us to give additional life to titles that are pulled from the collection to make room for other titles. In addition, there are those titles that can only be found in a used bookstore.
The Friend's are seeking two volunteers who would have four hours in a week to spend time in the store. Time would primarily be in assisting those who stop in as well as seeing that titles waiting to be shelved are put into place. And with practically any job, there are little tasks that appreciate being done for those perspective enough to see them. If interested, please leave your name at the front desk and you'll get a call from the Bookstore Manager to set up a time. You are needed. The primary qualifications are being a people person, have four hours in your schedule each week, and here year-around. Thanks for considering this possibility.
The display case near the DVDs and Large Print is filled with cats this month. From the collection of Mary Ann Pascuzzi, one can be filled with delight with these feline treasures. Not only can find cats in all kinds of poses but it's surprising the different ways the very ordinary experiences with this pet can be portrayed.
Artist of the Month
The Conference Room is aglow with color and vibrancy this month. Featuring the works of Pauline Healey, it's easy to get the feel that Pauline not only enjoys painting but that it comes to her as easy as it would be for us to get a drink when thirsty. What a wonderful talent!
You'll notice that the paintings are large in exposure. You can see the details and almost become part of the scene. What is particularly intriguing is Pauline's ability to bring a textured modern, contemporary feel but yet not be abstract. Many of the settings are full of movement that creates a sense of mystery and offers something new to see with every viewing.
