May 9, 2012
Melissa Schneider - Editor ( , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Are you trying to decide on the perfect gift to get your mom this Mother's Day? If so, you don't have that much time left, as this year, it falls on Sunday, May 13! But, don't worry, because we're here to help you. Listed below are all types of ideas to execute and places to go to treat your mom like a queen on her very special day.

Lunching and brunching

Taking your mom out to lunch on the island is the perfect chance to catch up and share stories and memories (maybe a few embarrassing ones) of when you were both younger. Shep's Subs, Parmesan Pete's, Subway, Skye's Mexican Cuisine, Bayside Grill, Beach Pierside, Dairy Queen, Chuck's Last Stop, the Cracker Box, Truly Scrumptious Cafe and Big Game Waterfront Grill are all great spots for some good lunching and brunching.

Mother’s Day may be just a few days away, but we’re here to help you decide just how you want to celebrate Mom’s very special day here on the island. She’s sure to love a trip to a tasty, local restaurant, such as Nervous Nellie’s, above, or a trip aboard the Pieces of Eight Pirate Cruise, also above. Photo by MELISSA SCHNEIDER.

Wetting your whistle

Stop by you and/or your mom's favorite bar or lounge for some cold drinks, good times and possibly some great live music. Some spots to consider include The Cottage, the Beached Whale, the Surf Club, The Mermaid, Valerie's Lounge, S.O.B., Bongos at Pink Shell, or the Lighthouse Tiki Bar.

If your mom isn't really into the bar scene, but enjoys her own cocktail from time to time, stop into Valerie's Lounge and Liquors or The Mermaid Lounge and Liquors for a bottle (or two) of her favorite spirit.

Wining and dining

If lunch isn't really your thing and you'd rather take her out to a nice, sit-down dinner, consider one of the following lovely island establishments she's sure to enjoy (it may be a good idea to make a reservation ahead of time, too): South Beach Grille, Parrot Key Caribbean Grill, Flippers on the Bay, Terra Nostra, Nervous Nellie's, Doc Ford's, the Yucatan Beach Stand, Matanzas, Chloe's at DiamondHead, the Fish House, Gulfshore Grill, the Sandbar and Grill or Bayfront Bistro.

Primping and crimping

Every mom loves a good pampering from time to time: A manicure, a pedicure, a relaxing massage and new hairstyle can go a long way. Our island has an array of businesses that will soothe your mom's mind, body and spirit. Stop by Esterra Spa and Salon, Aquagne Spa in Pink Shell, Hot Heads, Armando's, Nancy's Hair and Nail Design, Hair Etc., Elle Sandler's Well-Kneaded Massage Therapy or One Flight Up for all of her bath and beauty needs. She's sure to enjoy every minute of it!

The traditional favorite

There's never anything wrong with going about the traditional approach for Mother's Day: flowers. Brightly-colored, freshly-bloomed floral arrangements are beautiful, and Mom's eyes will light up with delight when she sees a bouquet with her name on it. Whether it's a single rose or a full bouquet of lilies, daffodils, roses, posies, birds of paradise or a glorious mixed arrangement, call or stop by FMB Florist for the perfect gift for sending near or far.

A gift she can wear

Perhaps your mom is big into fashion, or likes something shiny from time to time. Stop by Island Girl gifts and boutique, Comfort by Design, Palmetto's Apparel, Leani's Island Wear, Lucille's Boutique, Hodge Podge and Hot Flashes, Aqua Beach House or Bomb Diggity for that perfect outfit, perfect accessory or perfect piece of jewelry that'll perfectly complement her style.

Cruise along on Mother's Day

As Mother's Day always falls on a Sunday, it's often a day that you can have off to enjoy all of the sights and sounds of the island. (If not, there's nothing wrong with taking a raincheck and taking your mom out for fun on Fort Myers Beach at a later date.) Rent a bicycle through the local Quickie Bicycle, Fun Rentals or Fun-n-Sun Rentals for a fun trip down the island or the shore.

Or, cruise along on the water by renting a luxurious boat from Fish Tale Marina or Snook Bight Marina.

For those who would rather let a professional handle the operation of the boat, take Mom on a trip with the Big M Casino, the Pieces of Eight Sunset Cruise or the Fort Myers Princess.

Other fun ideas

If your mom is one who loves to read, swing by Annette's Book Nook for the latest release of her favorite author or favorite genre.

Dinner and a movie at Marco Beach Theater is also a nice way of showing your mom how much you care on her very special day.

Not sure what exactly she'd like? Gift cards are always a nice present for Mother's Day. Whatever you decide to do for your mom this Mother's Day, one thing is certain: She's going to love it! Whether it's a bouquet of flowers, a trip out on the town, a sentimental greeting card, or at least just a phone call, as long as you show her you care this Mother's Day, her heart will be warmed, and yours will, too.
