Beach softball team looks to defend title

June 27, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

The Fort Myers Beach Little League Senior Softball All Stars begin defense of their District and Regional championship this weekend.

The team made the trek to Niceville last summer for the Florida State Tournament. This year's squad includes eight girls from that team, girls looking to repeat last year's success.

"These girls have been working really hard," said Manager Ed Frazier. "We've been dodging raindrops, but I think we're going to be ready."

The team also includes players from Bonita Springs and San Carlos Park. None of the three leagues could muster enough to field a team alone, so the three leagues combined.

"We work well with the other leagues, and we all want to give them as much opportunity to play as possible," Beach Little League President Rick Loughrey said. "We're still only around 100 total kids here at The Beach."

Because of the numbers crunch, the Senior Girls are the only Beach All Star team playing this year. The team starts play this Saturday with the District 18 'Flurry for the Flag" in Bonita Springs. Their first game is at 10 a.m.
