Beach school opens house/ grades released

July 23, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Beach Elementary School will host an Open House on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 9 to 10 a.m.

All participating families are welcome. This is a good chance to meet your teacher.

Recently the Florida Department of Education released the 2011/12 school district grades. These grades are based directly on student performance on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, which underwent significant changes that increased the minimum score needed by students (i.e. cut score) as well as including student groups that had previously not been included in the grading process.

"As seen in student and school results, district grades across Florida dropped, including Lee County's, which went from an "A" to a "B," said Dr. Joseph Burke, Superintendent of Schools. "We knew FCAT 2.0 was going to result in a slight drop in academic performance, but we are very confident that our student and school grades will start to climb and so, too, will the District's. We're ready to do the hard work to ensure our students perform at the highest levels."

Lee County joins districts across the state that saw their "A" grade drop to a "B", including Broward, Palm Beach and Charlotte counties. In 2011 the State had 30 districts earn an "A" grade; in 2012, using the new FCAT 2.0 measures, that number dropped to 14.

Beach Elementary School also suffered in overall academic performance. After being called an "A" school from 2006 to 2010, Beach Elementary dropped to the "B" level in 2010 and the "C" level in 2011.
