Man attempts to run vver deputies in stolen vehicle

August 17, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

On Friday, August 17, 2012, at 8:48 a.m., a deputy with the Lee County Sheriff's Office ran a license plate check on a vehicle at Treeline Avenue and Daniels Parkway. He discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Fort Myers Police Department. As the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle fled eastbound on Daniels Parkway, at one point attempting to ram the deputy's marked patrol car. A pursuit began and additional deputies responded to assist.

A P.I.T. (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver was attempted between Chamberlain and Rickenbacker Parkways and the fleeing vehicle spun out of control and appeared to be incapacitated. Two deputies exited their vehicles to take the driver into custody but he regained traction and attempted to run over the deputies resulting in one of the deputies firing his weapon to stop the deadly assault. The driver was not hit and continued to travel eastbound on Daniels Parkway.

As the vehicle was heading eastbound, deputies ahead of the scene deployed stop sticks near Gateway Boulevard so they could stop the fleeing vehicle. Two citizens inadvertently struck the stop sticks resulting in flat tires and immobilizing the two vehicles.

The fleeing driver made a u-turn and began to travel westbound on Daniels Parkway where he lost control of his vehicle just east of Westlinks Drive. A patrol car engaged in this pursuit sideswiped two civilian vehicles as he attempted to assist in stopping the fleeing vehicle. At this point, the driver and only occupant of the vehicle was taken into custody and will be facing a number of criminal charges. The deputy who sideswiped the two vehicles received minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. There were no other injuries sustained during this incident.

Updates will be provided as they become available.
