October 17, 2012
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Two Miami men using credit card information belonging to other people had their interstate spending spree brought to an abrupt halt following a traffic stop by the Lee County Sheriff's Office Highway Interdiction Unit.

On Oct. 16, 2012 at y 7:51 pm, Detective Kirkby of the Lee County Sheriff's Office Highway Interdiction Unit, conducted a traffic stop on a rented red 2012 Dodge Durango at mile marker 116 on I-75. The detective observed the Durango switch lanes without using a turn signal causing the driver of another vehicle to apply brakes and swerve over.

The driver of the Durango, Adalberto Rodriguez, and front seat passenger, Yonsley Ruiz appeared extremely nervous. When he approached the window, the detective was able to smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. An investigation ensued and the vehicle was subsequently searched. During the search, approximately 1 gram of marijuana and fifteen (15) fraudulent or altered credit cards were found. All fifteen of the cards located had Younsley Ruiz's name on them and were confirmed to have stolen credit card information programmed on them. Rodriguez stated they purchased the alcohol for his birthday and he could not remember what store that bought it from. Ruiz and Rodriguez were placed under arrest for trafficking 15 fraudulent credit cards and possession of marijuana.

Further investigation revealed the suspects were traveling the I-75 corridor with the sole intent of committing identity theft and fraudulently using credit cards. These credit cards contained the account information of unsuspecting victims of identity theft who had their accounts compromised from skimming devices. The cloned cards and associated account numbers had an approximate potential loss value of hundred of thousands if used as intended. The two purchased $2,000.00 in merchandise. Ruiz had $1,363.00 in US Currency that has been seized for forfeiture.
