October 31, 2012
By Dr. Leroy Hommerding , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

This Week's Activities

Preschool Story Hour on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 10:30 a.m.

Grieving During the Holiday, Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 1:30 p.m.

Garden Club meets Monday, Nov. 5, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Upcoming Activities

Ecuadorian Art on Thursday, Nov.8, at 10:30 a.m. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy the art of Magdalena Tozquiaza, a prominent artist of Tiguan folk art. While many are attracted to the bright colors in the art, the presentation will heighten appreciation for what goes into the creation of these works. There's also a display of her art on the second floor exhibit near the elevator.

Ice Cream Social

The Social two Saturdays ago was such an uplifting and fun time that we have been encouraged to have a repeat. Watch for details in a week or two about the next Ice Cream Social. If you're able to contribute to this special activity, please see me. Any amounts are welcome.

Shellcrafting on Oct. 13 got such a welcome reception, that another class is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17, at 10:30 a.m. The session will offer both a demo and hands-on instructions for making animals from shells. Pre-register and $2 materials fee. Cats, owls and a variety of other animals will be candidates in the making.

Community Room

The Community Room is available by reservation for cultural, civic and educational purposes. Please ask for a Reservation Form and a copy of the Guidelines to review the parameters and possibilities.

One of the male candidates running for the Library Board in his reasoning for running for the Board noted that the current Library Board is "really not too worried about funding as they are authorized as a 'special taxing district' to raise taxes up to 2.0 millage. This means the board at their discretion can raise the tax rate from about 0.5 today to 2.0 without taxpayer approval!""

That comment is incorrect. The maximum millage that the library can charge is 1.0 millage. In the entire 57 years of the Beach Library, the millage has never gone over 1/2 of that amount. The current Library Board, devoted to the growth of the library and has worked on the expansion during the past 10 years, consider it a sacred obligation to stretch each tax dollar, each donation and gift to the library. The newspaper that offered the candidates commentary called it "opinion" and opinions are not always based on fact.

My comment here is to clarify this millage and the work of the current Library Board in their planning for library services, including the completely paid for expansion and renovation. The current Library Board's intention, as noted in this year's budget hearings, is to reduce millage next year when we are out of construction mode. It is comforting for residents and taxpayers to know what the millage parameters are, and probably more important, to know the history of millage by the Beach Library. In an article appearing in the News-Press on Oct. 26, the comment was made that library officials of the County Library System have considered asking commissioners to raise the library tax rate. Again, the Beach Library, as articulated by the current Library Board members, plans to reduce millage next year.

Where To Find?

Those returning, please note that during the renovation phase of construction, if you're looking for a fiction, mystery, non-fiction title or DVD, please stop at the Annex (former Friend's Bookstore at Seagrape Plaza). If you're seeking a classic title, magazine or newspaper or large print, go to the Expansion. Once construction is completed, around Christmas time, we'll be back under one roof again.

Smokers--a Gentle Reminder

In collaboration with Lee County Health Dept and the "Tobacco Free Lee" initiative, anyone needing to use tobacco products is to keep walking on the sidewalk. Please do not discard cigarette or cigar butts or other residue of tobacco on the campus. The Beach Library is a nonsmoking, no-tobacco use facility and property. Smokers, thank you for respecting those who do not wish to be affected by second-hand smoke.

Library HoursWhen you call in during closed hours, a message gives the open hours. Open hours during the renovation are Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9 to 2. Hours will be extended further once the construction is 100 percent completed.
