Please join the Estero Island Historic Society on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, to hear our first speaker of the 2012-13 season.
Gerri Reaves, local historian and author of the popular book, "Legendary Locals of Fort Myers," will present images from historical archives, family collections and her own photographs of contemporary Fort Myers local legends from her new book.
The presentation starts at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, at St. Raphael's Episcopal Church, 5601 Williams Street, on Ft. Myers Beach.
Topic highlights: From its beginning as a military installation in the second Seminole War through the postwar booms of the 20th century, Fort Myers has had its share of famous residents and heroes, ranging from Thomas A. Edison to Olympian Al Oerter and artist Robert Rauschenberg. Beyond being the winter home of such famous people, there have been less-known residents, both admirable and notorious, that are worthy of consideration as local legends.
