Beach children’s mural art project at Seafarer’s ready to be installed Saturday

Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

The long-awaited Fort Myers Beach Children's Mural Art Project at Seafarer's will be officially installed on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m., as part of the 2012 Paint the Beach event.

"This is a perfect example of an idea coming to fruition through collaboration among multiple organizations and individuals," said Town of Fort Myers Beach Parks and Recreation Director Patti Evans. "This project goes a long way toward improving our community's image and cultural awareness."

Local islander John Heim was the brainchild of this unique, community-based art project. Following support from members of the Lee County Commission and Town Council, a partnership between Lee County and the Town of Fort Myers Beach Park and Recreation Departments quickly developed.

With the focus to provide artistic opportunities for island children and beautify the Seafarer's Village Plaza site, the Children's Mural Art Project was born. With Lee County's financial sponsorship of supplies and materials, the Town was responsible to identify an artist willing to oversee the project and coordinate the community's participation.

Local artist Mark Harris of Harris Art Works agreed to volunteer his time and talents. He identified the necessary materials and supplies and assisted our young artists. Fort Myers Beach Recreation Coordinator Randy Norton successfully identified young art enthusiasts from Beach Elementary "K-Kids" program, Beach Elementary Arts students, Bay Oaks "Club Rec" program, Chapel by the Sea "Kidz Days" and Beach Baptist After school program.

Since early August, Harris has volunteered three days a week at Bay Oaks Recreational Campus to create a total of 36 6' x 8' murals. All residents and guests alike are invited to join our young artists and local dignitaries as we install the first Fort Myers Beach Children's Mural Art Project at the corner of Estero and San Carlos Boulevards.
