Residents urged to attend hearing on SCI development

February 13, 2013
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

A daily newspaper article on Feb. 4 entitled, "He got his way, and we got a bay," shared the story of Bill Mellor's fight to save Estero Bay from developers. He and a group of like-minded citizens stopped a massive development on the shores of Estero bay and made our bay Florida's first aquatic preserve.

Are we going to sit back and let their hard work go to waste? Our beautiful Lover's Key State Park is only a reality because developers were stopped from destroying that beautiful spot.

As stated in both weekly newspapers recently, the San Carlos Island development would put 271 high-rise condo units, 20,000 square ft. of office space, 30,000 square ft. of restaurant space, 58,000 sq. ft. of retail, 850 marina slips, and a 450 room convention center on 30 acres of tiny San Carlos Island. This plan provides living and working space for more than 2,000 people right at the base of the Sky bridge. The seasonal traffic nightmare we all experience will become a 365-day-a-year problem and will discourage visitors and residents from coming to Fort Myers Beach.

Don't let our beautiful aquatic preserve and island be sacrificed. Please let your representatives know how you feel and attend the zoning hearing meeting on Monday Feb. 18, at 9:30 a.m. in the Commission chambers at the Old Lee Co Courthouse at 2120 Main St.
