Cape man strikes worker on Bayshore Road

March 21, 2013
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

A Cape Coral motorist was cited Thursday afternoon after he apparently struck a man who was working along state Route 78/Bayshore Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol cited Mark Ashton, 57, with careless driving.

According to a report, Ashton was driving a Kia Spectra east on Bayshore when he approached a work area west of McSpadden Road at approximately 11:50 a.m. The designated work area was on the south paved apron of the roadway.

Ashton reportedly veered into the work area, struck a traffic cone and traveled toward the paved apron. The right side of the vehicle then struck Thomas Simon, 50, from Charlotte County, who was working in the area.

Simon was seriously injured and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

As of Thursday evening, he had been treated and released, officials said.
