The road less traveled: Going north for water to flow south

October 2, 2013
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

Fresh off a trip to the State Capitol for the Senate Select Subcommittee concerning the Lake O discharges, which was attended by four of us, as east of west coast representatives of a movement for clean water ways in Florida, we now embark on another trip north for water to flow south naturally as a group of activists standing up for our coastal communities.

I, along with many others from the movement for clean water, will be attending alongside our local leaders, state leaders and federal leaders in Washington, DC on Oct. 3, for a special hearing concerning the effects from the Lake O runoffs to our beaches and rivers, alongside the east coasts waters as well.

We will have a chance to speak to our federal and state leaders while being present in the U.S. Capitol during this hearing to prove to them that we will fight for our coastal communities when needed to. We want you, the people of our town, to know that we are speaking for all of you! We want you to know that we are demanding change for all of you and your children's futures upon our local waters! We want you to know that we are committed to making our waters beautiful again by voicing our opinions as one message which is united: Let the water naturally flow south of the lake by implementing Plan 6! (I suggest everyone ready this google "plan 6" to learn as much as possible about it as a solution to our water woes at the hands of the discharges).

The DC trip will pull out of Stuart on Tuesday. It is labeled as "The Truth Tour." We see this as a collective group united for solutions as we know that this is the only way for our communities to fully be heard! With all the vital signs written on the wall, such as tourism loss, economical loss, jobs loss, ecological life loss, health to our eco system at a loss, real estate at a loss, small and big business owners and their businesses on the coasts at a loss, and possibly the entire season at a loss will be highlighted when we speak, along with every other important factor involved as our shares "loss" to our communities and families by the negligent practices of water management in south Florida.

The plumbing may be bad and the operations may be backwards, yet we all as group look at it as if we do nothing or say nothing, then we too are a part of the problem. We are fighting for you Southwest Floridians. We are hoping that our elected officials we choose to hear us all when we tell them that contaminating our waters is not going to be business as usual any longer. We as group stand for our youth to have a better chance at healthy waters to swim in again soon, and to be able to guarantee then that their kids someday will also have that same chance.

The days of sitting around all summer long with the "brown water" are over. I, for one, am personally going to DC for my daughter and her generation to be able to enjoy this place for all the reasons we all share locally. This is home, and I'm going to bat for it when it's being victimized. I hope all of you feel the same about our town and its water quality concerns because without the water being healthy, I can assure you that we as a community will also not be healthy in all forms of how we are used to living here.

Stand up for it Fort Myers Beach! It needs ya now. Don't forget to attend the rally for clean water right at Crescent Beach Family Park on Oct. 19, for a celebration of our community and beach united in this all day family event starting at 11 a.m. Go to facebook.com/events/409132812521212 for more information.

As I told or state leaders at the state Capitol this past Wednesday, we are the same simple, ordinary people such as yourselves, the only difference is that you have the power to right a wrong that has deeply effected our simple, ordinary people of our communities from the Lake O runoffs.
