Paint the Beach is here again

October 23, 2013
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

To the editor:

The Town of Fort Myers Beach will be graced by over 50 plein air (in the plain air, outdoors) artists setting up their easels all around our beautiful town on Nov. 5-7. Using their preferred medium, they work to capture the scenes we enjoy every day here on the island. Shrimp boats, marinas, the gulf, colorful buildings and colorful people, the birds and wildlife are all potential subjects for the artists. We invite you to watch them ply their craft and then see the finished work as it hangs in the festival tent in Santini Marina Plaza. All the artwork is done on location...sun, bugs, wind, a sprinkle or two...all part of the challenge.

A gala collectors preview party on Friday Nov. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. is a ticketed event with the first chance to see the artwork and perhaps purchase a piece. Hors oeuvres are by the restaurants of Santini and a cash bar is available. This is an ever popular event with music, food and fun. There will be live auction, prizes for the artists and all surrounded by the beautiful artwork. Ticktets can be purchased at Fort Myers Beach Art Association, the Fish-Tale Marina office or on line at They are $30 in advance or $35. at the door. Artwork by Beach Elementary School Students will be displayed in the tent as they showcase their own plein air skills.

On Saturday Nov. 9, artists will paint for two hours around the Times Square area and then take their paintings to the festival tent where they will be judged. The North Fort Myers Steel will play their drums to the delight of all, then Jo List & Joe MoConaghy will entertain during the Jazz Caf at the tent from 3 to 5 p.m., with food and drink service by Skye's. The tent will remain open until 7 then reopen again Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sponsored by Fort Myers Beach Art Association, The Greater Fort Myers Beach Friends of the Arts, Santini Marina Plaza, Fish-Tale Marina and supported by the Town of Fort Myers Beach this year's plein air festival is shaping up to be the best yet. Artists will kick off with their check in hosted by Nervous Nellies on Monday. Items for their goody bags are provided by many of the local businesses and friends. Prizes are underwritten by Santini Marina Plaza, Fish-Tale Marina, Smokin Oyster Brewery, John & Jean Kakatsch, Edward Jones Investments, Plein Air Magazine, Watercolor Magazine, Chartpak, and t-shirts will be underwritten by The Beach Pub Inn. Please join us in celebrating the arts here on Fort Myers Beach.
