Deputy-involved shooting reported

March 2, 2014
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit are working a deputy involved shooting at the Pilot at 6050 Plaza Drive.

The incident occurred as deputies were checking out a possible stolen vehicle at one of the pumps at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday.

As deputies tried to initiate contact, the driver rammed two squad cars and attempted to run over deputies in an attempt to get away, officials said in a prepared statement, adding deputies "were forced to engage the subject, who was struck once by gunfire."

"The subject continued to drive away at a high rate of speed," according to the statement. "A short distance later, he crashed the vehicle into a parked truck and ran from the vehicle. He was immediately captured and was transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries."

A female passenger in the vehicle was not injured and is being questioned.

No deputies were injured.

Further information will be released as they become available, officials said.
