To the editor:
Apart from the important aircraft issue raised by my wife, would these candidates please state their views on dealing with the following matters?
1. Water Quality. For many years our island's lovely beach has been disfigured by red algae, red tides and pollutants from Lake Okeechobee merrily discharged down the Caloosahatchee river during the rainy summer months. Ray Judah, one of the best County Commissioners we have ever had, in my view, warned us all years ago in an excellent Guest Commentary in your newspaper, of the need to build a good, large water reservoir south of the lake in land currently owned by Big Sugar, to conserve this water safely and filter it naturally with reed beds before transferring it southwards to the Everglades. Nothing has been done to achieve this most desirable objective!
2. Estero Boulevard. As usual, we are all suffering gridlock, both driving on and off our island right now, during the season! Money is needed to provide separate roadways onto and off the island where Seafarers Mall is located, with Helmerich Plaza nearby, all with vacant land that would do an excellent job to achieve this! The matter has been discussed ad nauseam, but nothing has been done. Instead, we have had foolish suggestions to just make the whole problem worse by building properties on Seafarers Mall, or even turning it into a parking lot, which fortunately was turned down following public outcry. Now, we are finally getting to the point of improving Estero Boulevard south of Matanzas Bridge and Times Square...and there is money scheduled to do this. But will our Town Council grasp the nettle of creating decent access and exit roadways in the Matanzas Bridge area first of all? Of course, a lot of money may well be needed...and the County needs to be pressed hard to assist us to get it. It should have been done years ago!
What do our candidates think about these vital matters?
