‘Broadway on the Boardwalk’ to benefit hospital foundation

March 20, 2014
Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Tickets are on sale for Broadway on the Boardwalk, a theatrical extravaganza in Cape Coral.

Hosted by the Lee Memorial Health System Foundation, the event will take place next Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. on the boardwalk at Tarpon Point Marina. An array of talented singers and musicians will perform a selection of Broadway tunes as local chefs whip up sumptuous cuisine accompanied with cocktails.

"They have a great show lined up for the community," Scott Kashman, chief administrative officer for Cape Coral Hospital, said Thursday. "It's going to be a lot of fun."

Tickets are $75; proceeds will help support an ongoing wellness initiative at the Cape hospital.

"The hospital and health system is one key element for the health of a community," he said.

The hospital is creating an optimal healing environment, fusing aspects of the patient experience - physical, emotional, spiritual, behavioral and environmental - to support and stimulate healing. Called Pathway to Discovery, the project will entail a park, garden, pond, crosswalks and existing courtyard.

Kashman explained that it combines traditional treatment with preventive programs.

For example, the Wellness Education Park will consist of circular pathways in a butterfly garden, with physical therapy tools clinically integrated into the park to enhance patients' rehabilitation sessions.

The Healing Garden will have native plants and trees, a water feature and other soothing elements for people to relax and unwind, while the Heart Healthy Pond will offer seating alongside exercise stations.

The Pedestrian Connections, brick crosswalks, will connect key areas of the main pathway.

"We're creating an integrated pathway around our campus for our patients, for patients' family and, frankly, for our staff," Kashman said.

An existing courtyard will be renovated as the new employee entrance, with native vegetation, a fountain and sustainable furniture for relaxation and revitalization. It will be open to the public.

"We should see people's stress levels coming down," he said, adding that the project could help to reduce patients' pain levels and possibly overall medication use. "We should see an impact."

As of Thursday, approximately $85,000 had been raised for the initiative.

"Now we're in the position that we can actually start to break ground," Kashman said.

He added that raising $600,000 overall for the project would be great.
