Rocking for a Cause: Underground donates all T-shirt sales profit to local no-kill animal shelter

The local band Underground not only rocks on the stage, but they rock at life, in general. The four-man group recently made a very special donation to the Gulf Coast Humane Society, a no-kill, 501-c3 non-profit animal rescue shelter, from 100 percent of the proceeds of their T-shirt sales. The first check being $100, the members promise this certainly won't be their last donation to the shelter, and is a continued effort to help the rescue group, who finds homes for thousands of abandoned animals every year.

"We sell our T-shirts at all of our shows, and 100 percent of the profits go to the animal shelter," said Ken Freeland, lead guitarist of the group and huge advocate for helping and rescuing homeless pets of Southwest Florida. "This is our way of helping a great local organization, by rescuing thousands of homeless animals, caring for them and then finding them happy FUR-ever homes."

Although most of their T-shirt sales are made at their shows, if you can't make it to a gig, Ken offers meeting buyers somewhere to purchase one.

"If it means that much more money goes into the rescue fund, I have no problem meeting T-shirt buyers somewhere," Ken said. "We fully intend to keep donating all of our profits from the sales to the animal shelter, and every little bit helps."

The Beach Bulletin office (19260 San Carlos Blvd.) will act as another spot stocked with Underground T-shirts, offering men's and women's sizes, ranging from Small to X-Large. The cost is $10 each, and, again, the band takes all proceeds from the sale to the local animal shelter.

Underground has been rocking the local music circuit, including Fort Myers Beach, since 2010. Going through a member-swap due to a life-changing move over the years, along with an illness, the group keeps a strong bond, rocking anything from Pink Floyd, The Doors and Led Zeppelin to Rage Against the Machine, Sublime and the Violent Femmes. Members include Ken Freeland on lead guitar and vocals; Frank Orlando on bass guitar and vocals; Michael Cassella II on drums, percussion and vocals; and the newest member, Preston Mailand, frontman and lead singer of the group.

You can regularly catch the boys at The Cottage (Fort Myers Beach) and City Tavern (downtown Fort Myers) throughout the month, as well as special performances at other local hot spots.
