A Fort Myers Beach resident and Councilman will become the new chief executive officer of a Southwest Florida transportation company that aids the disabled, disadvantaged and elderly.
Alan Mandel will take over CEO operations of Good Wheels, Inc. on Aug. 1. He will succeed Tom Nolan, who is retiring after serving Good Wheels for 10 years as CFO and CEO.
"(Alan) has just the right qualifications to take us forward with the important safety net service we provide," said Joni Logan, current chairperson of the board of directors for Good Wheels. "He has been on the executive board of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, chairman of the Lee County Transportation Disadvantaged Local Coordinating Board and on the Board of the Horizon Council.
Mandel served as mayor of Fort Myers Beach from March 2013 to Match 2014. Good Wheels mission is to provide safe, compassionate, reliable transportation for the disadvantaged and disabled.
"I was pleased to be offered the position," he said. "I look forward to helping guide the organization."
Mandel, who was also formerly Vice President of Operations for Jacobson Stores, arrives at a critical time for Good Wheels due to cuts and realignments of Medicaid funding, says Logan. In fact, Good Wheels no longer provides medicaid transportation for most qualifiers since that facet was dropped June 1.
"One of the goals is to work with the organization to adapt to the new regulations and work with others to change or improve the funding mechanism," said Mandel.
Good Wheels was founded in June of 1990 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation to meet the door-to-door transportation needs of the disabled, disadvantaged and elderly in Lee County. It then expanded its service area to include most of Southwest Florida and is currently operating as the Community Transportation Coordinator and the major transportation provider for the Transportation Disadvantaged in Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties.
