Kathryn Ascher ("Kathi") Mackes was born on Feb. 23, 1939 in Freeport, Illinois, the elder child of John -S. and Marguerite L. Ascher. She attended Freeport public schools and the University of Wisconsin with a major in journalism, graduating in 1960. She then worked in Washington, DC in the office of Senator William Proxmire. In 1961 she married John Henry ("Jack") Mackes, a lawyer based in Washington. They moved to Duluth, Minnesota where Jack practiced law and Kathi worked in social work. In Duluth, they adopted twins, Michael and Molly, in 1965. They then returned to the DC area and lived in Cheverly, MD.
After her husband Jack died, Kathi moved with her children to Las Vegas where she began her long career in real estate. Kathi found her final home in Fort Myers Beach, a location dear to her from numerous family vacations. She developed an active real estate practice and became a broker with a broad client base from all over the world, many of whom became friends. Kathi made her house a local icon, decorated to resemble a train station. She was proud to be a "Certified Beach Bum". She was well-known on the beach for her generosity, open hospitality and celebrations. For the last year, health issues limited her activities, but she remained in frequent contact with family and friends.
Kathi is survived by her daughter, Molly, of Albuquerque, NM, son, Michael, of Fort Myers Beach, granddaughters Megan and Emily Luthiger, and brother, Michael Ascher (wife Britt). In addition she had special relationships with her niece, Alison Ascher Webber (husband Dale, children Andrea and Caden), nephew John Ascher (wife Chaoyan, children Michael and Zachary) and son-in-law, Peter Luthiger.
