Designer's pants a good fit for FMB gals

Dick and Jan Wood have been talking up their Lisette L Montreal woman's pants for years, passing along a claim that their unique fit eliminates an inch off the waste line.

"Not a day goes by that we're not in them ourselves," said Jan Wood of her and her employees. "And not just to promote them, but because they feel good."

On Jan. 27, customers at Palmetto's Apparel got to hear the spiel right from the horse's mouth, as Lisette Limoges, the fashion line's creator herself, paid a visit to the store at 7205 Estero Blvd.

Jeanne Laue, a resident of Fort Myers Beach, browses through the offerings during the trunk show.

"When they try it, they believe it," said Limoges, whose visit from Montreal featured several stores in south Florida. "I like to visit the stores and listen to the customers - especially the ones in Florida. We know the snowbirds are here so we get to hear from them, too, and hope they'll pass the word when they return back home.

"For us, Florida is like heaven."

And Fort Myers Beach is heaven and then some for the company, which reports the area is among its leaders in sales.

Why here?

"Our clientele here is a woman with a shape," said David Byrne, the area's sales rep. "This material is very giving, very versatile. You can exercise in it and then slip on heels and go out to dinner or to the club. It's for the active people, and there are many of those around here."

Added Wood, "They hide everything you want to hide."

Jan Lash, a snowbird from southern Illinois, is convinced. Just the other day, she said she spent $1,100 on Lisette clothes.

"I wear no pants other than Lisette," she said. "And this is the only store I shop at while I'm here. Back home, this type of thing isn't available."

Local resident Jeanne Laue is another dedicated Palmetto's shopper.

"They have unusual things you don't find elsewhere," she said. "And this is the only woman's clothing store on the island that is like a boutique."

Both said they enjoyed meeting the designer whose clothes they wear, and the steady crowd flow through the day indicated others did as well.

"This brings in a lot of people we wouldn't normally have," said Dick Wood, the store's co-owner.

Better yet, for every pair of pants a visitor tried on, $1 from both Palmetto's and Lisette L Montreal went toward the 21st Century C.A.R.E. Charitable foundation, supporting cancer patients.

"I'd be here regardless, but it's nice to see that," said Lash.

Limoges smiled at the upbeat atmosphere the day brought.

"I always say that if you look good on the outside, you'll feel good on the inside," she said.
