Two years ago, a couple of dilapidated School Street buildings that stood in the shadow of the town's community center and elementary school were frequent destinations for law enforcement.

"The place was a horrendous pit," said Rexann Hosafros, a Fort Myers Beach Town Council member. "There were scary people over there."

Now, owners Roland Wienmann and Beverly Milligan are approved to operate as a bed and breakfast, as the town approved on Monday their request to do so in what is zoned a residential area.

This building is home to six rental units that has been categorized as a bed and breakfast.

The two of them fixed up the dwellings and started a six-unit resort called the Meyerside, living on site in a neighboring duplex. They even opened an office and contracted with outside services, such as maids. They advertised daily and weekly rates.

Problem is, they were not in compliance for what was allowed in the area. They were ticketed for it.

Now, with the approval, their business is legitimate.

Council member Summer Stockton asked if the daily occupancy opportunity, as opposed to weekly renters, could bring a transient population near the school. Hosafros said the fact the owners not only live on site but operate an office should create a climate of them overseeing their guests.

Megan Will, the town's senior planner, said the school was notified of the request and it voiced its support.
