The big yum

Taste of the Beach delivers the goodies

The heat was intense and the smoke was dense.

Only at Taste of the Beach is that a good combo, as a mouth-watering cloud of barbeque aroma hovered above the crowd Sunday during the 21st edition of the foodie extravaganza.

Along San Carlos Boulevard on Fort Myers Beach, local restaurants proved that variety still rules, covering the bases with everything from tenderloin skewers to key lime pie.

"Oh, there's nothing quite like grazing on a lazy day," said Tayloranne Campbell, visiting from Ohio. "I love the chance to try something and either I love it or I can move on."

She nibbled at some barbeque from the Pierside Grill and gave the thumbs up.

"This style of barbeque I'm not used to - it's sweeter than back home - and that's what makes everything unique for me. I especially love all the fresh fish. All of this is new to us."

The setting offered up not only some fresh air but some fresh ideas for the vendors.

"It's great to get out and not only meet new people but meet some of our competition," said Jody Anderson of the Salty Crab. "I've gone back and forth to try different things and I've discovered some things I'd like to add to my menu."

For Cabana's Beach Bar and Grille, tucked within DiamondHead resort, the event packs a big punch of exposure.

"We do not advertise much outside our building, so this is great," said Derek Baker, a supervisor at the establishment. "There are people who have lived here for years and may not know about us. This makes for good networking."

And those who get votes of approval get valuable "street cred." On site were actual voting machines, courtesy of Lee County.

"They even allowed underage voting, which was a thrill for my grandchildren," said Jane Plummer, a local Realtor who took in the festivities. "Of course, they voted for the ice cream stand."
