American Sandsculpting Championship accepting vendor applications

June 22, 2016
By ERIC DeVAUX ( , Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Calling all vendors! The 30th Annual American Sandsculpting Championship is getting closer and is now in the process of filling vendor spots.

Ted Clifton, the vendor coordinator, hopes to attract 50 or 60 vendors to the event which is about the same as last year.

"It's a big event," Clifton said, and laughed. "Actually it is not that many. I do the shrimp festival and we have 110 (vendors) for that. And that's only a weekend and this thing lasts 10 days. Not everybody is there all the time."

Vendors can choose different packages, such as one weekend, two weekends, or the entire championship, which is 10 days. They can also choose to be inside the gated area, which has limited space, or in the vendor village.

For the first weekend, vendors would have to pay $400. For all 10 days, and if the vendor wants to be inside with the sandsculpting, it is $1,200. It varies.

The vendors that choose to be inside with the sandsculpting have their advantages.

"You know people are going to walk around everywhere," Clifton said. "Where as you're on the outside, they theoretically can come in and not even see you."

A 50 percent deposit is needed for a vendor to keep a spot and within 30 days the vendor needs to pay the rest of the amount. If vendors pay in full, they will save 10 percent. For this to happen, payment needs to be made by Sept. 15.

The reason that these events have vendors is because they bring in more people.

"There's some vendors that have been there every year for 10, 15 years." Clifton added. "They have their customers."

This year the championship will be held Nov. 18-27, at the Wyndham Garden Hotel on Fort Myers Beach. This is following the record-setting sandsculpting championship last year. Last year, with 47,000 in attendance, the most in 30 years.
